Online fitness classes are especially useful if you’re the kind of person who likes a group atmosphere, and can say no if it’s free? And if that’s not enough, take a class with a roommate or call a friend via video link – then you can chat while you work out!
If you don’t know where to find these types of online classes, we recommend searching YouTube for a free yoga class or a free platoon class – there are always a few.
Pulls on door frame
If you want to build strength in your upper body, pull-ups are a great way to do that. And while you’ve probably seen them in a prison movie or in a fitness fanatic’s bedroom, it’s important to know that pull-up bars are an absolute must for any home gym.
The bar is attached to the door frame (above) and you can use it to do pull-ups. Depending on the type of pull-up, you can train different muscles and try different exercises – we recommend searching the internet for ways to test yourself with this equipment. Pull-ups mainly train the lats (back) and biceps. You can also change your grip so your palms are facing you doing pull-ups to focus more on your biceps.
Although most door frames should be able to support a pull rod (and without damage), you should check its condition before installing it.
The last thing you want is to find out in the middle of a climb that the door frame has rotted, because not only can the damage cost you some of your rent, but a fall can also injure you.
Setting fitness goals
Sometimes it just takes a game to motivate you to get out of bed and start exercising.
We’ve found that apps like Strava or Nike+ Running Club are great when you can connect with your friends. Seeing what others are doing can inspire you to get out of the house, and running outside is always more fun than on the treadmill!
Strava also offers the possibility of taking part in competitions, i.e. receiving a (virtual) medal for an achievement, for example. For example, if you run a 5 km race.
The app also tells you how fast you rode through certain segments (road segments designated by other Strava users). After each run or bike ride, it will tell you if you’ve broken your record for that distance – believe us when we say you’ll be competing with yourself very soon.
But whatever app you use, the main reason to download it is to get outside and get some fresh air – it’s such an easy way to take care of yourself.
Use of fitness applications
In addition to setting goals with apps like Strava and Nike+, we recommend using other apps to fully immerse yourself in the home training environment.
We particularly recommend SHREDDY and SWEAT, as they allow you to train both at home and in the gym.
These applications sometimes charge a monthly fee, or you can opt for an annual payment (which is often discounted). If you’re not sure if this is your thing, start with a monthly subscription. That way, you’ll spend less money if you don’t want to use it or don’t like it.

Make your own weights
Making weights at home couldn’t be easier, and you can usually use what you already have in your home to do it.
In the past, we’ve used empty four-quart plastic milk bottles and filled them with sand – with the advantage that the milk bottle already has a handle to lift it. But you don’t necessarily have to use sand – you can also use water, rice, pebbles or anything else that is in abundance.
If you’re looking for something heavier, try filling a backpack or duffel bag with books, magazines, canned goods, or whatever else you can find! If you need extra weight, you can even fill the bag with the milk bottle weights mentioned above.
Use what you already have
A home gym that costs around £50 will never quite match a real gym equipped with thousands of pounds, but you can bridge the gap by making the most of what you already have in your home.
For example, you can B. Turn your couch or bed into a bench (support it with pillows if necessary) or use a coffee table as a platform for tricep lunges.
Walls may not seem very useful, but we used them for strength training. Handstands are a great way to strengthen the core and arms, and walls are ideal for improving balance.
Low triceps work on your triceps, and handstands are good for your core and shoulders. You can also use the side of the bed/bench to do oblique or incline push-ups to train your chest, shoulders, triceps and core.
