So many tests, so little difference. This is exactly what can be said of a descriptive essay versus a narrative essay. This type of academic writing tends to confuse most first-year students.
Description vs. storyline: Consistent properties
The title of the descriptive essay speaks for itself. While a narrative essay requires a plot construction and some interaction between characters, this article focuses on an image of a place, an event, a person or something else. Although there is no clear pattern, many descriptive passages speak of human feelings and sensitivities.
Writing a descriptive essay: Where to start
Before you start writing, you should carefully prepare yourself to make your work easier and less time-consuming. The preparation phase consists of 3 crucial parts:
1. Selection of theme
The first step is very logical. You have to choose a question that does this:
- Interesting for you and the potential reader;
- Fascinating enough to attract the attention of anyone who is passionate about this field;
- Easy to understand and as narrow as possible;
- Familiar and pleasant for you personally.
Also make sure you already have or can find relevant information online. Sometimes students take on a case that is no longer relevant.
The subject of a descriptive essay may only focus on a single object, whether it is a person, a place, or a feeling. Include only certain things or people that are important to you and that are related to your feelings. Otherwise, the image will not be as vivid as it could be.
2. Collection of information
The second phase of the preparation consists of systematizing the already existing information on the chosen topic, while at the same time examining the editorial requirements. Divide the sensory details into several categories, including each of the five senses. It would be useful to make a list in the form of a 5-column table. For a better understanding, we give some examples of possible descriptive sensations.
Imagine writing about the room you lived in when you were a child:
- Sound: Floors always crack when someone comes in.
- Vision: The warm tint of the wooden furniture warms them up.
- Feel it: The smell of grandma’s fresh pastries comes from the kitchen.
- Feel it: The rug next to the bed is soft as silk.
- The taste: My Christmas presents always include sweet-tasting milk chocolate candies.
In general, there are no specific requirements for these tests, but sometimes the teacher can specify the subject and its characteristics for the description.
3. Attachment designation
And thirdly: Get a taste of your future trial. It shows the most important ideas of your work and organizes them automatically by distributing the structure. There are several methods of description that can help you:
- Mind mapping;
- Stage tickets ;
- Tree structure, etc.
Opening idea
Each editorial document consists of three parts: Introduction, body (3 paragraphs), and conclusion. In a descriptive essay, it is more desirable to mark 3 paragraphs as follows: the least important paragraph, the second most important paragraph, and the most important paragraph that makes the final impression on the reader. Go on, then.
Preparing a thesis
Letters are an essential part of all academic work and should be mentioned in the introduction and acknowledged in the conclusion. The description is no exception.
Introduction
This is where the author informs the public of this type of writing. Start this section as usual with a tick and familiarize yourself with the event to be described. You can also give the player a short history or backup information here. General facts about a subject should be presented in descriptive language, mentioning the five semantic details without going into detail.
Body of the text
Make sure the reader understands how you feel. Describe the event or thing as convincingly as possible to captivate your audience. Follow the basic rules:
- Use catchy adjectives such as. B. huge instead of big or tasty instead of delicious. This is the only essay in which you can afford to use language that is not very formal or academic;
- Make your story more metaphorical and use comparisons. For example, you could say that your grandmother’s dishes were like manna from heaven after a hard day at school. Or make a vivid comparison: I loved my grandmother’s brownies the way Homer Simpson loved doughnuts;
- Bring your work to life by describing your feelings and emotions about the event, person, or thing as you experience it.
All in all
Summarise all your thoughts in the conclusion by repeating the thesis and a strong closing sentence. Don’t say anything new in that part.
Polishing of text: Editing and proofreading
The writing suggests changing the structure, sentences, or some details of the plot of the essay, but tends to focus on occasional errors in grammar and formatting. If you are still unsure whether you have corrected all the errors, ask a friend or relative to correct them. Or take yourself out of the text and try to proofread it in the morning.
If you want to finish your work quickly, change the look of the document, print your copy, or split the essay into several parts and edit each part separately. Put your tasks in the strict order: The most important things must come first.
Descriptive essays are fun compared to serious work such as a memoir or an essay. Sit down and reveal what you found most exciting in a newspaper. This process is quite creative and fun, so have fun!
