Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was born on the 7th. November 1888, born in Trichinopolis, South India. His father was a professor of mathematics and physics, so he was immersed in an academic atmosphere from the start.

In 1902 he entered the President’s College of Madras, where he received his bachelor’s degree 1904. After an exam, he won first place and a gold medal in physics. In 1907, he graduated with an M.Sc. degree. His first studies in optics and acoustics, two fields of research to which he devoted his entire career, were conducted while still a student.

Since a career in science did not seem to offer the best opportunities at that time, Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman joined the Indian Ministry of Finance in 1907: Although the duties of his office occupied most of his time, Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman found an opportunity to conduct experimental research in the laboratory of the Indian Association for the Promotion of Science in Calcutta (of which he became honorary secretary in 1919).

In 1971 he was again offered the chair of the Department of Physics of Palitha at the University of Calcutta and he decided to accept it. After 15 years in Calcutta, he became a professor at the Indian Institute of Science in Banglore (1933-1948) and, since 1948, director of the Raman Research Institute in Banglore, which he founded and endowed.

In 1926, he also founded the Indian Journal of Physics, of which he was chief editor. Raman promoted the establishment of the Indian Academy of Sciences and has been its president since its inception.
